Motorized Access Levels in the Ghost Too High for Grizzlies

 Motorized access density in southern Alberta’s Ghost Watershed is more than three times that officially recorded by the Alberta government, and more than four times the maximum recommended in the province’s Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan says a new report released August 8. Bighorn Wildland Protection Calls Bolstered by New Grizzly Report

Calls to protect one of Alberta’s last great unprotected watersheds received a recent boost with the publishing of the province’s new report, Status of the Grizzly Bear in Alberta. The 4,000 square kilometre Bighorn area, which sits east of Jasper and Banff National Parks, has suffered from motorized abuse, and it is now clear that grizzly bears are one more victim of that abuse. As part of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation's commitment to consultation with stakeholders and the public, the Parks Division would like to invite you to comment on the proposed deregulation of Coalspur and Lambert Creek provincial recreation areas.

Both provincial recreation areas are little used, subject to vandalism and no longer considered commercially viable. Additional camping stalls will be added to nearby provincial recreation areas to compensate for the potential closure of these two sites.
