Transforming collaboration to advance lo​cal stewardship efforts

This interactive event gives participants the opportunity to actively learn, share, and engage in collaborative dialogue across sectors. Using the newly developed environmental stewardship framework, participants will:

  • Learn how stewardship and resource management principles can more effectively be incorporated into the land-use planning and development process
  • Identify and discuss local potential projects that would benefit from applying this approach, then develop a process for implementation
  • Share results, identify opportunities, needs and gaps in the region

Dress for the weather, don’t forget your hat and bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a bag lunch. Everyone is welcome to participate. Lake Winnipeg Basin Stewardship Fund

The water quality of Lake Winnipeg has been negatively impacted by excessive amounts of nutrients from both urban and rural sources. Lake Winnipeg is fed by a vast basin covering approximately one million square kilometres extending over four provinces and four states. More than half of the nutrients reaching Lake Winnipeg originate outside Manitoba's borders. Recent estimates indicate that 53% of the total phosphorus and 51 % of the total nitrogen to Lake Winnipeg is coming from upstream jurisdictions. Phase II (2012-2017) of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Initiative has committed $7.4 million to continue its support of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Stewardship Fund (LWBSF) (herein called the Fund).
 

The Fund provides financial and technical support to implement high-impact solution-oriented projects aimed at reducing nutrient loads, and improving the ecological sustainability of the lake and watershed. Environment Canada administers the Fund with support from a Technical Review committee and a Public Advisory Committee.
 

Projects involving 'tried and proven' activities as well as projects demonstrating innovative techniques, technologies and measures to reduce nutrient inputs into Lake Winnipeg are good candidates for this funding. The Fund also supports activities that contribute to a better understanding of current conditions and track improvements in environmental quality within Lake Winnipeg and its watershed.

AWA calls on the Alberta Government to take a stronger conservation stance for the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan

With the comment period soon ending on January 15, 2014, Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) has sent official recommendations to the Alberta government in response to the Draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP). After extensively reviewing the draft, AWA has serious concerns with the draft and wants significant changes in the final SSRP. Although there are positive strategic directions in the draft indicating a need for a cumulative effects management approach, land use tradeoffs and sufficient headwater and biodiversity protection are largely absent. Draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan Information Session

The Draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP) is a land-use plan for the South Saskatchewan River basin area of Southern Alberta. This region covers ~13% of Alberta’s land area and is home to 45% of Alberta’s population, including Calgary. The land use plan will determine how we use our land and waters for industry, environment and recreation for decades to come. The public comment period on the plan is open until JANUARY 15.
