Join AWA on a driving tour as we meander our way through various locations that exhibit Alberta’s phenomenal wilderness and wildlife, the unique geology of the Porcupine Hills, and a site visit to an abandoned well under the responsibility of the Orphan Well Association. Come out for a great day of exploring, and learn more about your backyard!

Fortress Ski Hill Should Not Truck Mountain Water to Calgary
Fortress Mountain ski hill is proposing to remove 50 million liters per year of water flowing into Kananaskis’ Galatea Creek and truck it to a Calgary water bottling facility. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) strongly opposes this water use and calls on Fortress ski hill to withdraw its proposal. Whaleback Fall Hike

The rocky ridges and rolling forested hills of the Whaleback are picturesque, and represent a vital landscape within southern Alberta that is sure not to disappoint. Join Nick Pink and Conservation Specialist Nissa Petterson as they explore this beautiful Montane wilderness during its full fall brilliance!

Indigenous and environmental groups fear for the future of Wood Buffalo National Park as the UNESCO World Heritage Committee echoes warnings of unresolved threats
On July 3, 2019, representatives from around the world gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the 43rd World Heritage Committee meeting and discussed the fate of Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada’s largest national park. The World Heritage Committee called upon Canada to take further actions and warned that if Canada fails to address the threats facing the Park, it could be placed on the List of World Heritage Site in Danger. Bighorn Ram Ridge Hike
Offering breathtaking views of the Foothills to the east and the Ram River Valley, Ram Ridge is a wonderful piece of wilderness within Bighorn Country. The lush meadows below the exposed ridge provide the canvas for many beautiful wildflowers, and provide habitat for Bighorn sheep, grizzly bears, elk and countless bird species such as yellow-rumped warblers and spruce grouse. The Bighorn Country is an integral part of Alberta’s wilderness, serving as a migration corridor for many wildlife species, and is critical to the headwater security for the North Saskatchewan River. Motorcycle Club Fined for Killing Threatened Fish
Brooks Motorcycle Club and its Vice President have been fined a total of $70,000 under the Species at Risk Act and the Fisheries Act for organizing a motocross race that crossed through North and South Racehorse Creeks several times, seriously harming and causing the death of young bull trout and threatened westslope cutthroat trout. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) applauds the decision for defending Alberta’s imperiled native trout and upholding the intent of the Species at Risk Act, as well as recognizing the damage that motorized use can have on fish habitat.
