Summer Student Job Opportunity with the Alberta Environmental Network

Research and Communications Assistant (RCA)
Application Deadline:
Thursday, May 10, 2018
flexible within Alberta

Please note that this position requires that certain conditions be met as it is partially funded by Service Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs programs. Details below.

The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) believes that to effectively preserve and protect Alberta’s environment – addressing a wide range of issues including climate change, energy, land use and conservation, air and water issues - interested environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs) and other Albertans need support to strategize, collaborate, share information, build capacity and mobilize.

This position offers you an opportunity to play an important role in expanding the AEN’s reach and impact as the AEN enters a phase of rejuvenation and strategic development guided by its members. As part of a small staff that is adapting its organizational programs and services to meet the needs and optimize the opportunities of AEN members, you would help drive the process forward through responsibilities that range from capturing the history of the organization to reaching out to established and prospective AEN members to contributing to the development a communications plan.

Our organization

The AEN is a non-profit, non-partisan organization comprising groups throughout the province dedicated to helping preserve and protect Alberta's environment. The AEN

  • facilitates the sharing of information and resources among member groups;
  • assists member groups and individuals in taking common action;
  • promotes awareness of environmental issues and activities with stakeholders and the general public and;
  • facilitates member group meetings and the participation of member groups in meetings and consultation with government and/or industry.

The position

The Research & Communications Assistant (RCA) will be part of team providing services, as listed above, to AEN’s members. The RCA’s responsibilities will include

  • outreach to and support of members;
  • research into the Alberta environmental community;
  • research into funding sources;
  • development of outreach materials; and
  • development of the AEN communications plan.

We anticipate that beyond the aforementioned responsibilities, the RCA will be eager to contribute their own ideas and suggestions in shaping how the AEN adapts and progresses. This may lead the RCA to design some of their own tasks.

In filling this position, we will consider a wide range of applicants. We are looking for someone who shares our commitment to protecting and preserving Alberta’s environment.

To thrive in this position, you would have a demonstrated interest in environmental issues and activities. This can shine through in many ways. Environmental or communications-related studies and/or abilities would be a strength. Further, it would be valuable for you to conceive the big picture and think strategically.

This job is partially funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program of Service Canada. In order to qualify as a job applicant through this program you must be:

  1. between 15-30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  2. registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
  3. intend to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
  4. a student in a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program;
  5. a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and;
  6. legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

Given that the AEN is a province-wide organization, we have some flexibility regarding the location from where the RCA will work. As such, it is expected that the RCA should be prepared to create their own work space, work remotely, maintain close communications with staff and travel to Edmonton, Calgary and other parts of the province should it be required.

In the RCA position you would work 30 hours per week for 8 weeks. The wage for this position ranges from $18 to $20 dollars an hour depending on what you bring to the table.

To apply for this position, please send you resume and cover letter to [email protected] on or before Thursday, May 10. Please send your resume and cover letter in the body of your email rather than attaching them.

Interviews will start upon receipt of applications and will be conducted in person or via Skype. The expected start date is, with some flexibility, May 21.
