Advance a culture of scientific excellence in providing open and transparent public access to data on the current and future condition of Alberta’s environment.

The Office of the Chief Scientist provides critical oversight to ensure the credibility and integrity of the province’s science and monitoring program.  Appointed by the Minister and as a member of the department’s executive committee, you will champion science, research and the role of evidence across all program areas.  An integrative, cross-disciplinary thinker, you will provide expert advice on current and emerging issues, and advise on complex evaluation and analytical processes that underpin the reporting of current and future environmental conditions in the province.  Key accountabilities include overseeing secretariat functions for an independent Science Advisory Panel and an Indigenous Wisdom Advisory Panel.  Building partnerships with universities, scientific and research-based institutions and organizations, you will enable policy-driven, collaborative projects that provide new knowledge to inform environmental decision-making.

This role requires an intellectual leader in the field of environmental sciences with demonstrated strengths working within and across government, private sector and academic communities.  Your background includes extensive related leadership experience in the design and implementation of environmental monitoring or research programs at a sub-national, national or international level.  Able to engage effectively in both science and policy arenas, you are a systems thinker who understands the integration of socioeconomic, natural and engineering sciences that supports decision-making. Advanced relationship building skills will position you to lead interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams to achieve results in new and developing areas.  Ideally, you have expertise in the field of biodiversity and a sound understanding of indigenous, industry, community and citizen perspectives on key science and environmental issues.  A Ph.D. degree in a related scientific discipline is required.

The Chief Scientist is appointed by Ministerial Order for a term of up to 3 years, with the possibility of appointment to a second term.  Compensation will be commensurate with candidate qualifications.  Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.  This competition may be used to fill future vacancies.   Closing date:  June 19, 2020.
