Hours: 10-20 / week
The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) seeks a canvasser to join the unique Alberta Talks project. The Alberta Talks staff and volunteer team have a goal of engaging in community on issues that they are concerned about, with a current focus on renewable energy regulations in Alberta. We are hiring immediately for this part-time, open-ended contract.
Responsibilities
- Regularly canvass, by phone or door-to-door, engaging with the public in a friendly, respective and engaging manner
- Use the script alongside personal communication skills to solicit open, non-judgmental and honest conversations about diversifying the economy in our province in the face of climate change
- Engage in reciprocal storytelling, open-hearted, non-judgmental listening while delivering a compelling campaign message and recording responses from Albertans
- Connect Albertans with the tools they need to take meaningful action (such as contacting their representatives, displaying a lawn sign, etc.)
- Participate in staff training to enhance outreach skills
- Other relevant duties, as assigned by the team, like volunteer canvasser recruitment
- Strictly follow the campaign’s protocols
Ideal Candidate
- Passionate about progressive politics and fostering democracy
- Strong communication skills; enjoys talking to people and motivated to speak with as many people as possible
- Compassionate and non-judgmental
- Open to new challenges and interested in building campaign skills
- Culturally competent and able to respectfully engage with teammates and the community
- Able to work independently
- Eager to support ethical, ecological, social and political change
- Is familiar with the Albertan cultural and political landscape
- Experience with Slack, CallHub, Google Workspace, and other data analyzing and mapping software preferred
- Ability to be emotionally resilient during work hours
- Able to work evenings and weekends
- Access to reliable transportation
- Prior canvassing experience is not required but considered an asset
- Available for hourly work in the evenings (approx 4pm-8pm) and weekends (flexible); hours may change based on project needs

About Alberta Talks
Alberta Talks runs campaigns that fulfill Albertans’ need for open and honest conversations about their conflicting feelings about our Oil & Gas economy in the face of climate change. The project utilizes canvassing to have meaningful conversations with voters to shift attitudes and raise urgency about the need for government action on climate change. The campaigns build people power to pressure our governments to take meaningful action.
