Connecting Alberta’s environmental groups

We are a network of individuals and groups working together on shared concerns. AEN members include individuals and representatives from member groups that connect, collaborate and share information.

The AEN is a link between the environmental community and government, industry, the media and all Albertans.

Join the network

Albertans and environmental groups are welcome to join the AEN as members – there are memberships for both individuals and groups. Members contribute to preserving and protecting Alberta’s environment by sharing information and collaborating on shared issues. Learn more about becoming a member of the AEN.

The AEN supports an inclusive and diverse environmental community for all Albertans.

Now that the flash is gone from the fireworks displays
History & conservation interests announce Centennial Wilds

Calgary - History and conservation interests have combined to launch the “Centennial Wilds” project for Alberta. The project’s vision is to keep Alberta’s intertwined natural and cultural histories alive for the next 100 years through encouraging the appreciation, designation and preservation of the wilderness lands and rivers where significant pre-settlement history took place. Its ultimate goal is to encourage the provincial government to designate and protect the “Centennial Wilds” as a Centennial legacy of natural and cultural heritage for the future.

“Future generations may wonder at our blindness if we neglect to set them aside before civilization invades them.” - From the writings of the late Jas. B. Harkin, founder of the Historic Sites & Monuments Board and first Commissioner in charge of national parks (1911- 1936) Read More

Action Alert: Canada-wide Standards (CWS) for Mercury Emissions from Coal-Fired Electric Power Generation Plants

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) issued a draft Canada-wide Standard (CWS) for mercury emissions from Coal-Fired Electric Power Plants on June 28, 2005.[1] The draft CWS has been approved in principle by the Ministers and is expected to be finalized and endorsed in the fall of 2005.

The Notice of the proposed (or draft) CWS was published in the Canada Gazette Part 1, July 23, 2005. Comments to Environment Canada are due September 23, 2005[2].

At present, coal-fired power plants operate in 6 provinces. Some of these provinces have also provided an opportunity for public comment. However, at this date, Ontario is the only province with a comment period outstanding (comments are due by October 6, 2005). This makes it all the more important that Environment Canada receive your comments; even if you may have already commented in your own province (Comments can be submitted to both federal and provincial governments.).

Comments on the Federal Notice are to be submitted by September 23, 2005 to:
Cynthia Wright
Director General, Strategic Priorities Directorate, Environmental Protection Service
Department of the Environment
Gatineau, Quebec K1A 0H3
[email protected] (email).

All comments must cite the Canada Gazette, Part I and the date of publication of this notice, July 23, 2005. Read More
