For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 15, 2005

Threats to Alberta’s Largest Native Grasslands Protected Area maybe approved without a Public Panel Review

National and Provincial conservation groups, including the Coalition For Alberta’s Future (CFAF), CPAWS, FAN, and others, are urging Albertans and Canadians to voice their concerns about EnCana Corporation’s proposal to drill up to 1275 new shallow sweet gas wells within the Canadian Forces Base Suffield National Wildlife Area (NWA) over a three-year period. Without a significant public outcry before December 12, 2005, the approval of this environmentally damaging development may go ahead without a Public Panel Review as part of the required environmental assessment, disallowing concerns to be expressed in an open and transparent way. Suffield National Wildlife Area Needs Your Support: Help Protect It From Further Drilling Activity

Alberta Wilderness Association

Action Alert: November 1, 2005

The Issue

EnCana Corporation is proposing to drill up to 1275 new shallow sweet gas wells within the Canadian Forces Base Suffield National Wildlife Area (NWA) over a three-year period, essentially doubling the existing 1154 gas wells installed over the past 30 years. The NWA was designated to ensure critical habitat protection for species at risk and reverse habitat loss and fragmentation trends by increasing protected habitat outside National Parks.

AWA's position is that no further industrial development should be allowed in a protected area. Concerned citizens and groups are calling for a public panel review as part of the environmental assessment. This area is of national and international significance, and wildlife values must take priority. AWA's goals are to reduce footprint in the area; restore wellsites, pipelines, and other disturbances; and establish timelines for phasing out energy production in sensitive areas. Read More
