Red Deer Seedy Saturday

April 11, 2010 - 7:00pm to 11:00pm

What is Seedy Sunday?

Red Deer Seedy Sunday is part of the worldwide Seedy Saturday / Sunday events that celebrate open-pollinated seeds. In Red Deer, the event is citizen-driven; coordinated with the support of Seeds of Diversity Canada, Spruce Lane Organic Farm, Kerry Wood Nature Centre, the Red Deer Garden Club, and the Growing Food Security in Red Deer project (members of ReThink Red Deer).

Red Deer Seedy Sunday is bringing the skill of growing from seed to seed to the forefront in Central Alberta. As large commercial seed companies consolidate and only oer more hybrids and patented varieties, we are increasingly losing the regionally adapted collections that have developed in our unique prairie climate. Seedy Sunday helps maintain this irreplaceable genetic diversity by offering non-hybridized, non-GMO varieties of seeds. You and your family can discover the superior taste of heirloom vegetables, learn to save seeds and share them with your neighbours. As you grow them season after season these seeds will adapt and grow that much healthier!

A family event open to:

  • general citizens,
  • new gardeners,
  • local seed savers,
  • prairie seed companies,
  • native plant collectors,
  • conservation groups,
  • community gardeners,
  • organic growers
