Did you know that millions of litres of fresh water are being extracted from Western Canada and made permanently unuseable? The Red Deer and Area Chapter of the Council of Canadians invites you to the free public presentation “Mixing Water, Oil and Gas” about fresh water extraction from our rivers, lakes and aquifers for unconventional oil and gas development. Hear from guest speaker Dr. David Sauchyn, the Director of the Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative at the University of Regina, and from people in central Alberta who will share their stories about the dangerous natural gas extraction method known as “fracking.”
Dr. Glen Graham, Director for Peace and Justice at Burman University will be emcee.
Dr. David Sauchyn will present information on the hydrologic cycle, watersheds and the Western Canadian river systems. Then, citizens from central Alberta will share the knowledge they have gained from dealing with fracking. Hydraulic fracturing – or “fracking” as it is more commonly known – is a technique that involves the injection of millions of litres of water and thousands of litres of unidentified chemicals underground at very high pressure in order to create fractures in the underlying shale rock formations and extract the natural gas below the surface. Fracking contaminates water and has negative health impacts on humans and wildlife.
