AWA Hike: Birding and Orchid Weekend

June 11, 2011 - 6:00am to June 12, 2011 - 6:00am

An Exploration of the Lakeland Boreal Forest

With Chip Scialfa and Aaron Davies

Spend a summer weekend exploring Alberta's boreal forest near Lac La Biche while we look for some of the 200 bird species that can be found in Sir Winston Churchill and Lakeland Provincial Parks. Chip Scialfa, a self-confessed "bird nut", will guide the group for looks at Caspian terns, Cape May warblers and Philadelphia vireos, among other avian gems. Aaron Davies will lead day hikes in search of the orchids that can be found in this special habitat. Easy walking, good company, nature’s beauty; all in some of Alberta's remarkable outdoor places.

You do not need to be an experienced birder or orchid specialist to enjoy this weekend. Bring your enthusiasm (and willingness to get up early!) Camping sites are available in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park, near Lac La Biche.

You must supply your own camping gear and food for the weekend. A few weeks before the event AWA will be sending more detailed information to all registered participants.

Please Note: The hikes during these weekend events are rated as Easy-to-Moderate, covering approximately 3-5 kilometres with minimum elevation gain.
