Alberta Wetland Classification System Field Guide Online Training

Wetlands are an integral part of Alberta’s landscape and provide a critical role in maintaining healthy watersheds, providing habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, maintaining upland forests, and providing many other ecosystem services and benefits. This free, online training event will provide an introduction to wetland identification and classification of Alberta’s wetlands in accordance with the Alberta Wetland Classification System (AWCS), present the newly released Alberta Wetland Classification System Field Guide and review key aspects of the Guide including a vegetation-based classification decision key.

Why should you attend?

This is an opportunity to learn about the new AWCS Field Guide and how it can support your work. Participants will :

  • Gain new knowledge or refresh existing skills on wetland identification, classification and functions according to the AWCS
  • Learn about and explore DUC’s new Alberta Wetland Classification System Field Guide
  • Gain an understand of how to apply the field guide for wetland classification in the fiield

This workshop will be limited to a maximum of 50 participants to provide a forum to engage with the presenters, ask questions, and discuss opportunities to get involved or utilize the site.

This training is eligible for professional development credits under the Association of Alberta Professional Forest Management Professionals (AAFMP).

What is the AWCS Field Guide?

With funding and support from Alberta Innovates, the Alberta North American Waterfowl Management Plan Partnership, and the Prairie Habitat Joint Venture, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) developed a plain-language field guide based on the Alberta Wetland Classification System (AWCS). The Field Guide will be released in spring 2021 and contains a classification decision key, high-quality photographs, illustrations, wetland fact sheets, and plant identification information, all formatted and designed for optimizing wetland identification and classification while in the field/working on the landscape.
