As Albertans, we are so used to clean water flowing from our taps that it is easy to forget how much we depend on it. Though we are solid to the touch, 60 per cent of our bodies are made of water. All plant and animal life could not survive without this simple molecule, and neither could Alberta's most important economic drivers, including agriculture and the oil sands.

Water Matters has released a new report entitled "Making the Connection: Water and Land in Alberta".
In Alberta, 90,000 square kilometres of forests safeguard the upper reaches of the Athabasca and Saskatchewan River systems, and more than 100,000 square kilometres of wetlands store and filter water over 18 per cent of the province. Making the Connection: Water and Land in Alberta, a new report by Water Matters, concludes that the Alberta government must protect these and other watershed resources to prevent a water crisis in the province in the coming decades. This is the easiest, most effective and least costly way to maintain healthy ecosystems and the benefits they provide including clean, abundant drinking water, sustainable fisheries, and water for agriculture and other industrial uses. The best part? It will also save taxpayers billions of dollars over the long term.

The Environmental Law Centre's Consistency and Accountability in Implementing Watershed Plans in Alberta: A jurisdictional review and recommendations for reform is a jurisdictional review focused on comparing law and policy approaches to implementation of collaboratively produced and approved watershed management plans. The review identifies central issues that must be dealt with in a policy framework for implementation of plans.
