CPAWS SAB appoints Brad Clute as new Executive Director

CPAWS Southern Alberta Chapter

Calgary – Brad Clute, a lifelong Albertan and nationally known environmental leader, has been appointed Executive Director of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Southern Alberta Chapter, the Board of Directors announced today.

Clute joins CPAWS-SAB after a long and successful career with Mountain Equipment Coop and two decades of activity in the environmental community. He was Regional Community Investment Specialist, Western Canada, for MEC for seven years and most recently Regional Human Resources Business Manager. Read More

Caribou hearing adjourned pending further discussions with federal government

CALGARY – A legal case concerning protection for boreal caribou habitat in northeastern Alberta has been adjourned, pending further discussions between the environmental groups and First Nations that brought the lawsuit and the federal government.

Lawyers from Ecojustice represent the Alberta Wilderness Association, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, the Mikisew Cree First Nation, and the David Suzuki Foundation in the proceedings.

Public Lands Should Not be Sold to Mackenzie County

A recent proposal to sell 140,000 hectares of Alberta public lands to Mackenzie County would convert vital boreal native habitat into agricultural lands and grazing reserves.

Albertans Ignored to Allow Motorized Recreation and Industry in Castle Parks

Calgary, AB – To appease a noisy minority, the Government of Alberta appears to be opening the door for motorized recreation and industry in the Castle Parks, despite the direction of public consultation on creation and management of the parks.

Fortress Ski Hill Approved to Truck Mountain Water to Calgary

Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) has learned that the Alberta government recently granted approval to Fortress Mountain ski hill to remove 50 million liters per year of water from Kananaskis country and truck it to a Calgary water bottling facility to sell as ‘pure’ mountain water. It is our understanding at the Alberta Environmental Network that Reconciliation starts with the land, and there is no Reconciliation until we have faced the Truth. While Truth is held collectively, we recognize everyone is on their own learning journey, at their own pace. Our work at AEN focuses on the lands outlined by the Province of Alberta, lands with which we are learning to be in kinship relationship, in the nêhiyaw (Cree) spirit of treaty-making. The lands we work for are described in Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10. The traditional keepers of this land are Anishinabe, Nêhiyawak (Cree), Dené, Dane-zaa, Nakota, Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda), Tsuut’ina, and Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy); this land is also the homeland of the Métis. We are committed to building meaningful reciprocal relationships, to be of service particularly to those directly experiencing the effects of oppression, genocide, and exploitation.
