20th Annual Climb & Run for Wilderness

Climb and Run for Wilderness is Alberta Wilderness Association's annual Earth Day event at the Calgary Tower. This event provides you the unique opportunity to climb the 802 stairs inside the Calgary Tower. The day is filled with entertainment, including an outstanding Wild Alberta Expo where you can learn more about Alberta's wilderness, wildlife and wild waters. Sheep River Winter Hike

The winter snow contains many stories.  Animals (and some birds) leave their tracks, the action of the wind is recorded and life-giving water is stored to be released with the return of spring.  Winter hiking!  Why not?

AWA Hike: Fall in the Whaleback

Distance: 12-14 km
Elevation Gain: 200 m

Wander the trails, ridges and valleys of Alberta's largest remaining montane wilderness.  View ancient pine trees clinging to life.  Try to spot wildlife such as elk, deer, bear, coyotes and wolves.  Register early, as this is a very popular hike!

AWA Hike: Lakeland Camp & Hike

Setting up camp in the wonderous confines of Lakeland Provincial Park, we will spend two days exploring the natural wonders of Alberta's boreal forest.  On our daily excursions we will marvel at the array of plants and animals that make this part of the world a unique blend of forest and wetland.

AWA Hike: Sage Creek

Wander through the coulees and open spaces of this impressive south-eastern Alberta mixed grass prairie.

Distance: 7 km
Elevation Gain: minimal

Sage Creek, located near Manyberries in south-eastern Alberta, is a well-preserved mixed grass prairie environment.  In addition to the great diversity of prairie grasses and shrubs, expect to see pronghorn antelope, deer, sharptail grouse and meadowlarks.  Wander under the blue dome of the endless prairie sky. AWA Hike: Plateau Mountain

Explore the Ecological Reserve on the summit of table-like Plateau Mountain

Distance: 12 km
Elevation Gain: 250 m

Located in southern Kananaskis Country, Plateau Mountain's Ecological Reserve offers superb views and a rare diversity of plants and animals.  The summit is broad and windswept and harbours animals such as the bighorn sheep and the hoary marmot.

This hike is rated as Moderate, covering approximately 12 kilometres with an elevation gain of about 250 metres (800 ft).
