2013 Martha Kostuch Annual Wilderness and Wildlife Lecture

Oct 26 2013 - 12:00am

With special guest speaker:

Lorraine Mitchelmore
President and Country Chair, Shell Canada Ltd.

Over much of the past century Alberta's natural environment has been caught in the grip of ever increasing resource extraction. Riches from Alberta's lands have economically benefited many here at home, nationally and internationally. But now there is growing recognition from within the province and from outside that Alberta cannot maintain its water and air quality, its arable soil base and its indigenous wildlife without major changes towards ecological sustainability. Alberta has literally raced into its present environmental predicament; now, in determining our future, how can AWA best bridge gaps and maintain forward momentum towards a goal of ecological sustainability? How will we best work with a variety of partners to secure a legacy of abundant native wildlife and natural wild spaces, of clean water and air, and the soil base we depend upon for food supply, all of these being integral parts of ecological stability?

Music for the Wild: Magnolia Buckskin with guests Horizon Ridge

Oct 28 2012 - 1:00am

Hailed as one of the city’s “leading roots country acts”, Magnolia Buckskin brings you bohemian cowgirl, gospel touched folk roots music with sweet harmonies. Kathy Cook, Natasha Platt, Emily Triggs and Corry Ulan take turns singing the lead on their original tunes. They juggle between instruments: mandolin, banjo, guitar, accordion, bass and percussion. The sound is a collection of their influences: a little bit of country and a hint of West Virginia drawl, the bluegrass sweet spot, the folk connection, and a heart for gospel.

Music for the Wild: The Wardens with guests Prairie's Edge

May 13 2012 - 1:00am

The Wardens are three Parks Canada park wardens sharing their stories through song. Backcountry horse patrols, mountain rescues and wildlife conflict all provide inspiration for these singing wardens whose “tales of adventure and misadventure” in the rocky mountain national parks have been set to music and verse. The evening's songs are accompanied by visuals and stories that give the audience an unforgettable way to experience what life is actually like for a park warden.
