The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) connects Albertans and environmental groups that are dedicated to preserving and protecting Alberta’s environment. As a non-profit and non-partisan organization, the AEN supports collaboration of the environmental community throughout the province.

We are a network of individuals and groups working together on shared concerns. AEN members include individuals and representatives from member groups that connect, collaborate and share information.

Albertans and environmental groups are welcome to join the AEN as members – there are memberships for both individuals and groups. Reactions to the 2010 Budget

Since being tabled on March 4th, the 2010 Federal Budget has been widely discussed within the environmental NGO community, with many groups expressing disappointment, several calling it a missed opportunity and others highlighting some positive investments for the environment.

Biodiversity Hotspot #4: In A World Where Intact Wilderness is Rare

The Yukon’s Peel River watershed is one of the largest and most beautiful intact natural areas left in North America. Most of the 68,000 km2 watershed is pristine, and is home to species that are rare or threatened elsewhere.

The watershed is also an ancient cultural landscape and an important fish and wildlife harvesting area for First Nations. Mining and oil and gas extraction threaten to fragment this stunning landscape and harm its delicate ecological balance. Read More

Environment Canada invites Canadians aged of 9 to 35 years to celebrate the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity by participating in the Nature Matters! Contest.

Biological diversity is the variety and abundance of life on Earth. To help raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity all over the world, the United Nations General Assembly declared that 2010 will be the International Year of Biodiversity. Environment Canada is celebrating this, in part, with the national Nature Matters! First ever report card on deep oilsands reveals significant room for improvement

Some in-situ environmental impacts as serious as mining

Today, the Pembina Institute released Drilling Deeper: The In Situ Oil Sands Report Card. It is the first comparative environmental assessment of in-situ oilsands projects. Scores among the nine Canadian operating projects surveyed ranged from 25 to 60 per cent, with five of nine projects scoring less than 50 per cent. Suffield National Wildlife Area — Conservation Makes Economic Sense

As shale gas discoveries greatly expand already abundant reserves of natural gas, the economics of EnCana's application to drill an additional 1,275 gas wells within Suffield National Wildlife Area are becoming ever more questionable. The Suffield Coalition has long argued that it would be economically imprudent and not in the public interest to approve EnCana's application. In June, EnCana announced it was shutting in gas wells because of low demand and prices, so the time may be just right for EnCana to abandon further drilling within Suffield National Wildlife Area.
