CPAWS Releases Forestry Report

Forest Industry Making Little Progress Towards Sustainability

EDMONTON, July 13, 2005

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), Edmonton, today released an in-depth report on the state of forest management in Alberta. The objective of the study was to determine how far government policies and industrial practices still need to go to achieve the vision set forth in the Alberta Forest Conservation Strategy, released in 1997. To do this, CPAWS compared and contrasted the management plans of all large forestry companies in the province and the government’s new Forest Management Planning Manual against the Alberta Forest Conservation Strategy and the Forest Stewardship Council boreal certification standard. Action Alert! More support is needed for Alberta's caribou!

Thanks so much for all the quick responses to send letters to David Coutts in support of our caribou! Read on for another opportunity to take action to protect the caribou!

Stop the Logging, Save the Caribou!

While government and industry claim they are concerned about caribou recovery, they continue to plan logging in caribou ranges that their own studies have shown do not contain enough habitat to support caribou populations. Please write to West Fraser and Foothills Forest Products and cc your letter to the Honorable David Coutts and tell them that this is not acceptable! Here are some points that can be included in your letter:

  • Woodland caribou are considered "threatened" in Alberta
  • The Little Smoky herd west of Hinton has been identified by government as "at immediate risk of extirpation", and the A La Peche herd as "stable" but only since it has abandoned its winter range in the Foothills.
  • The government has just declared it will implement a series of actions to add a greater level of protection for woodland caribou and establish a planning team to focus on these two herds among others in the area.
  • This planning team is not likely to have its recommendations ready before logging in these ranges continues this winter.
  • A recent study has indicated there is currently inadequate habitat for these two herds.
  • Logging in these ranges should be deferred until a plan is in place and shown to be effective in restoring these caribou populations.
  • Canfor has deferred logging, so should you!

Ten More Dead Grizzlies: Pressure Mounts on Struggling Bruins

Ten more grizzly bears were killed in the province's spring grizzly bear hunt, according to new figures released by the Alberta government. Conservation groups say that this is totally unacceptable in a province developing a Recovery Plan process for a "threatened" species.

"This is 10 bears too many," says Nigel Douglas, Conservation Specialist with Alberta Wilderness Association. "The evidence is clear now that grizzly bears are in serious trouble in Alberta and this hunt shames Alberta both nationally and internationally." Alberta Fiddles While Caribou Perish

Alberta's Minister of Sustainable Resource Development has refused to put a moratorium on new industrial developments within any of the ranges of this threatened species. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) are demanding that Alberta adopt key recommendations of the Alberta Woodland Caribou Recovery Team that would temporarily protect caribou from new industrial development within ranges of the most at risk caribou herds.

They are also calling for clear regulation of the forest and energy industry to ensure best practices are followed in key caribou ranges and to prevent new developments in critical portions of the ranges. Read more about Alberta Fiddles While Caribou Perish

Be a Part of the Fun at the North American Solar Challenge 2005 Finish Line!

For the First Time, the Race Finishes in Canada on July 27 at the U of C

On July 17, over 20 cars fuelled completely by the sun’s rays will set off from Austin, Texas to make the 10-day journey over 4,000 kilometres to finish here in Calgary on July 27.

The University of Calgary is proud to be the first Canadian venue for the North American Solar Challenge Finish Line. On July 27, starting at 11:00 a.m. come out and be a part of the excitement as the solar cars race down Charleswood Drive to finish in front of the Olympic Oval on the U of C’s campus. Cheer on the teams as they complete the race and enjoy the fun-filled summer celebration complete with music, entertainment, sustainable energy and environmental displays, children’s activities and a free BBQ. You can see the solar cars up close and personal, and have the chance to talk to the teams and learn about the incredible passion and commitment that inspired them to compete in the North American Solar Challenge!
