SESA Solar Seminar— Alberta Passive Solar Greenhouses: Lesson Learned

Speaker: Rob Avis, Verge Permaculture

Rob and Michelle Avis have been living with and researching a solar greenhouse in Alberta for the past five years. Designed to meet the northern climate challenges of efficiently capturing heat and light while limiting heat loss and providing adequate ventilation, humidity, pest control and snow shedding; their experiment has provided some successes and a lot of wisdom. Rob will also discuss the ideal cold climate greenhouse including such design improvements as thermal curtains, an air lock entry, a water wicking system and a subterranean heat storage system. People's Climate Mobilisation: Global Day of Action

From the People's Climate March website:

The People’s Climate March is expected to be the largest demonstration for climate action in history. The march takes place just two days before President Obama and world leaders gather for an emergency Climate Summit at the United Nations. Marchers are demanding leaders go beyond rhetoric and commit to bold action at the summit.

More than 750 organizations around the world are supporting the People’s Climate March. In total, the groups represent roughly 100 million people worldwide.

The 15th annual Eco-Solar Home Tour is coming for TWO DAYS on the weekend of May 31 and June 1, 2014. The tour is absolutely free! You don't need to pre-register but you will need to make your own way to the homes. With 13 homes on the tour it is difficult (but not impossible!) to see them all. There will be 6 different homes open Saturday and 7 open on Sunday. The homes will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoon from noon until 4 pm.

Pembina reacts to CNRL’s application to resume oilsands operations while bitumen continues to leak near Cold Lake, Alberta

6 Mar 2014

Erin Flanagan, Analyst at the Pembina Institute, made the following comments today in response to Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.’s (CNRL) application to resume steaming operations near areas experiencing on-going bitumen-emulsion releases:

“CNRL should not be allowed to increase high pressure cyclic steam stimulation (HPCSS) in proximity to the areas impacted by blowouts in 2013 until the Alberta Energy Regulator investigation is complete, the results have been made public and interested parties have had an opportunity to comment on recommendations arising from the investigation. It is premature to debate additional production until this report is complete and has been subject to public review.
