Oil and Gas Development Transforming North American Landscapes

Accelerated drilling activity is transforming significant portions of North America's natural landscapes. University of Montana scientists recently released the first broad-scale evaluation of oil and gas industry impacts on landscapes across the U.S. and Canada, including Alberta.

Alberta Ecotrust Community Grants

The heart of Alberta Ecotrust’s work is supporting the people and projects that effectively address Alberta’s most pressing environmental issues. We accomplish this primarily by making grants to enable Alberta environmental non-governmental organizations to more effectively deliver programs, projects, and results that advance their environmental missions within our issue priorities.

Alberta Ecotrust presently has three grant streams: Community Grants, Major Projects, and Collective Action Grants. For the year 2015 we will be accepting applications for Community Grants and Major Projects only. Applications for Community Grants will accepted in the spring with a deadline of May 4th. We will be accepting Letters of Intent for Major Projects in August.

In addition to the regular WSG funding, for 2015, Land Stewardship Centre, in partnership with the Education and Outreach division of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, is offering a new grant stream under the current Watershed Stewardship Grant (WSG) Program to fund wetland-specific projects in support of the Wetland Policy. The long-awaited Surface Water Quantity Framework (SWQF) and Tailings Management Framework set guidelines on how much water oil sands companies can extract from the Athabasca River, and guidelines regarding the management and production of toxic tailings waste.
