Beyond Monitoring— Responsible Management Needed for Oilsands Environmental Impacts

3 Feb 2012

Today, forty five years after the first tar sands mines started, the federal government has finally taken steps to introduce credible monitoring for contaminants and habitat degradation from oilsands development. Alberta Wilderness Association believes that long-overdue monitoring of Alberta’s oilsands impacts is a step in the right direction, but monitoring itself will not fix any of the issues which have so bedeviled the industry for the past few years. Environment groups ask Federal Court to force minister’s hand on caribou protection

25 Jan 2012

EDMONTON — Environment Minister Peter Kent’s failure to reconsider emergency protection for woodland caribou in northeastern Alberta has prompted environmental groups to ask for the Federal Court’s help.

Six months ago, the Court called Minister Kent’s decision not to recommend emergency protection for woodland caribou “out of the blue,” and ruled that it ignored scientific evidence and must be set aside. The Minister was instructed to reconsider the government’s position, but has yet to show any signs of activity on the file.

Ecojustice, on behalf of the Pembina Institute and Alberta Wilderness Association, has asked the Court to amend its ruling to include a deadline to force a response from the Minister. Read more »

Pipe Up About Enbridge's Dirty Pipeline!

Jan 24 2012 - 8:30am

Starting next Tuesday, the public hearings on Enbridge’s destructive tar sands pipeline comes to Edmonton and it’s important that we are there.

Don’t Tar Our Future or BC’s Coast

Rally at the Enbridge Tar Sands Pipeline Hearings

Wingate Inn (18220-100th Avenue)

Spread the word! Invite your friends to the Facebook event.

Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline is 1,170 km of potential destruction, proposed to go from just outside of Bruderheim, AB to Kitimat, BC. It would carry approximately 525,000 barrels/day of tar sands oil and 193,000 barrels/day of toxic condensate back along the same route to Alberta. The pipeline would cross the traditional and unceded territory of dozens of BC First Nations, over 1,000 streams and rivers – many of them salmon bearing – would go through the Great Bear Rainforest – the last remaining intact temperate rainforests on the planet –  and would bring over 200 super-sized oil tankers through one of the narrowest and most dangerous straights in Canada.  Every step on this path is a disaster waiting to happen. Each one would be tragic even before there is a spill. And each one can be prevented. Read more »
