Youth & the Environment

The Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) is a new initiative of the Edmonton Community Foundation. This program is made possible through a financial gift from a generous donor and will support activities that are initiated, led, and organized by Edmonton youth.
The activities that can be supported through the program are wide ranging - from organizing a local street dance to initiating a career fair or hosting workshops on topics like bullying, self-defence, or civic engagement. Youth groups are welcome to be creative and to apply with any idea within the parameters discussed in the accompanying information.
Edmonton Community Foundation has convened a youth advisory committee to review applications and recommend projects for funding.

Youth aged 18 - 28 years from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and Territories interested in transit and sustainable transportation are invited to apply to be delegates at this unique summit event.
Delegates will come to learn, share ideas, discuss issues and opportunities
and explore career paths with peers and industry professionals.

Alberta Ecotrust is delighted to announce the results of its
2010 Young Environmental Stewards (YES) program. With funding support
from TransAlta and the help of a volunteer grant review committee of
Young Environmental Professionals, the spring round of YES grants is
helping
nearly a dozen young Albertans convert their environmental passion into
action through projects ranging from community gardening to people
powered events! The 2010
program garnered 29 applications, of which 11 were funded with a total
of $45,334.00.

Rationale for the Conference
The Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC) is the youth arm of the Sierra Club working towards local sustainability. This is hugely beneficial because geographical areas face similar issues locally and work together as a network of individuals (environmentalists) and collectives (organizations). The goal of this conference is to educate all interested students from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia and provide them with tangible skills and opportunities to get involved in the green movement. Ultimately this conference provides the means to develop the knowledge and ability to work towards a more sustainable future. Please join us for a fun-filled weekend including very interesting workshops and seminars. This is a great opportunity to meet and network with students interested in similar issues as yourself!

TThe YWCA Vancouver has successfully launched the Youth Eco Internship Program (YEIP), which comes on the heels of the government's redefined agenda to promote labour skills and an eco-savvy generation next.
Through this innovative scheme, funded by Canada's Economic Action Plan, the YWCA Vancouver will be placing 90 young, diverse, unemployed Canadians aged 15-30 on paid 3, 6 or 9 month internships. Intern and host recruitment has just commenced for young people, as well as for environmental, community and women-serving organizations, however, priority will be given to internships having an environmental focus.

TakingITGlobal.org is pleased to announce it will be presenting a free half-day introductory workshop on global warming and youth action in Edmonton on February 21, 2009. Global Warming and You: A Youth Climate Activism Workshop will provide local context for the global problem of climate change and will engage participants in a discussion and dialogue about community-based solutions. The workshop is geared towards high school students, but any young person interested in becoming more involved in the fight against global warming is welcome to attend.
