Lakeland: A Guided Day Hike
With Dr. Richard Thomas

Join host Dr. Richard Thomas, naturalist and environmental consultant, for an Alberta Wilderness Association guided hike of Lakeland, east of Lac la Biche.

Lakeland is renowned for its old growth forests, known as nature's museum, a genetic storage bank to continued biodiversity. Thirty-four species of birds and mammals are dependant on the remaining old-growth forests of Lakeland, including barred owls, Blackburnian warblers, hoary bats, pileated woodpeckers, woodland caribou and northern flying squirrels.

The hike will be of easy to moderate difficulty. Interested people should contact the AWA to pre-register.

2. Wednesday July 27 - Friday July 29, 2005
South Castle Wilderness: A 3-Day Wilderness Backpacking Trip
With Reg Erns

The destination of this three day backpacking trip is planned for one of the Front Range Canyons, Spionkop. Local climatic conditions make the Front Range Canyons a unique feature of southwestern Alberta. Base camp will be at the lower edge of the alpine. Day hike possibilities include the top of Loaf Mountain, Bovin Lake, and ridges overlooking the South Castle valley.

Cost: $100 - AWA members, $125 - Non-members

3. Thursday August 11 - Sunday August 14, 2005
White Goat Wilderness: A 4-Day Wilderness Backpacking Trip
With Don Wales

This four day backpacking trip is a wonderful opportunity to discover a corner of the White Goat Wilderness. The hike traverses Nigel and Cataract Pass to explore the headwaters of Cataract Creek.

The wildflowers are spectacular in the Cataract Meadows. The entire area is surrounded rugged 10,000 ft peaks with several hanging glaciers feeding alpine tarns. Bighorn sheep, goats, marmots and pikas are often spotted, this is grizzly habitat, and there is possibility of seeing the rare mountain Caribou. Bird sightings may include Clarke's Nutcracker, rosy finch and ptarmigan among others.

The Beehive: A Guided Day Hike

Located in the Upper Oldman Valley in southwestern Alberta, the Beehive presents a stunning mix of cool dark sub-alpine forests, and broad alpine meadows against a dramatic backdrop of rugged rocks and scree. Considered a living museum, the area provides habitat for Grizzlies, as well as summer range for Elk and Bighorn sheep.

Join host James Tweedie for a day hike in this spectacular area. James has hiked in the area for many years, and has a wealth of knowledge on its natural history.
