Mining, Tailings Ponds and the Importance of Consultations
This week, the subject of using lakes and rivers as tailings ponds for mining activities became a hot topic of discussion in Canada. The environmental significance of designating bodies of water as tailings impoundment areas, under Schedule 2 of the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations, stresses the importance of public consultations in any policy process, where ENGOs, industry and government can discuss and hopefully decide together the best course of action.
