It is more apparent than ever that people are craving some experienced, local and reliable advice on the issues of climate change and the environment and what they can do to help the situation. For that reason, we are returning to the original concept (from 2001) of the "Sustainable Future Fair" at Bikeology — a fun and interactive, family-oriented exposition of sustainable urban living. The future starts now.

The Sustainable Future Fair showcases exciting new energy technologies, and solutions to the question of what personal actions help to reduce global warming, reduce toxic emissions, prevent wilderness degradation and other environmental problems. Bikeology guests will bike away with more insight, solid information and inspiration to start sustainability initiatives in their own lives and to network with others in their communities.

As per the Union of Concerned Scientists, and in the interests of providing maximum clarity and education to our guests, presenters will be organized according to the sustainability areas listed below:

  • Transportation: all people-powered modes of transportation, including skateboarding, etc.; smart growth initiatives such as walkability and public transportation (Sorry, no cars allowed at this bike festival, no matter how progressive).
  • Household Operations: new energy products: renewable and efficient, water and energy conservation, non-toxic household products, the "four R's", conscientious consumerism, and eco-homes: past, present and future.
  • Lawn and Garden/Wilderness Protection: permaculture, eco-scaping & native plants, composting, rain collection, common ground vs. the backyard fence; and our addition: preservation of wildlife and aboriginal lifestyles, eco-tourism and other ecological services of the boreal forest.
  • Food Security: locally grown or raised, slow food, organic, vegetarianism, GMO awareness, preservation of farmland, rural-urban cooperation, buying local and reducing the supply chain.

If your organization has educational materials, campaigns and other opportunities for regular folk to learn, advocate, start a discussion or build community around one of these four areas, or products, services or expertise to offer in one of these areas, call us by June 11 to register your free table. Once confirmed, we will send you a letter with guidelines for participation in Bikeology 2007.

Don't have a campaign or group but would like to volunteer at the Future Fair, Bikeology or other Bike Month events? We definitely need your energy, and it's a really good time! We take care of our volunteers and presenters with parties, music, gifts, food and more. Contact us, and we'll redirect you...
