Water for Life 2010 Conference: Managing and protecting water reserves for future generations

Start:
Mar 25 2010 - 9:00am - 4:00pm

Water crises are occurring more frequently than ever before, and they threaten the lives of people everywhere.

The need is pressing for comprehensive and integrated water management programs that involve parties outside the water sector, as governments alone cannot solve water crises without the cooperation and coordination of these groups. Although there is growing public awareness of world water issues, there are few concerted, long-term and effective efforts on the water front, and only when water disasters hit communities do concrete actions take place, often with results limited to the short-term.

This conference aims to foreground the subject of water issues and provide a space for discussion and debate by policy-makers, water managers, academics, students and the public in general.  It will focus on water management provincially and globally, its progress and challenges, and the implications of water issues around the world.

Derrick Jensen’s Deep Green Resistance Training — Register Now!

Derrick Jensen and rad co-facilitating friends are likely gonna be coming to Edmonton on March 26-28 to do a 3-day intensive workshop called Deep Green Resistance. This 3-day workshop is particularly relevant to those of us who have been resisting the industrial developments of more tar sands, nuclear power and other environmental destructive projects. By bringing this conference to the prairies we will be building on the grassroots community that is already coming together, building on our network and strengthening our skills to bring about the changes we need to see.

The Deep Green Resistance training is a three-day workshop for activists, changemakers, and other concerned or inspired folks who are interested in delving into some critical reflection on the state of the world and our role in fixing it. We live in the most destructive culture to ever exist. Yet does our activism reflect that? If we really accept the seriousness of the situation, what would that mean for our strategy and tactics? How do we build up a culture of resistance? These are some of the questions that will be explored over the weekend, while we build on our skills to continue doing good works.

Start:
Apr 6 2010 - 7:00pm

Part of Mother Nature’s clean-up crew, turkey vultures have attracted relatively little scientific study.  In 2003 Wayne Nelson and several Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division colleagues  followed up on public reports of vultures on old buildings in eastern and northeastern Alberta and a significant study has arisen.  In 2006 Wayne retired as a wildlife biologist and, along with Rick Morse, carried the vulture project into his retirement and expanded it.
