The Under Western Skies biennial conference series at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada pays homage to Donald Worster, the environmental historian whose book by the same name is a landmark in ecocritical studies.

UWS 2014: Intersections of Environments, Technologies, and Communities

With less than one month to go till Under Western Skies 2014 (Calgary, September 9-12), conference organizers wish to announce that Justice Thomas R. Berger will speak in person on the first morning of the conference.

This year is the fortieth anniversary of the Justice Thomas R. Berger Mackenzie Pipeline Inquiry. Justice Bergerwillbe accompanied by the Justice Thomas R. Berger Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry Exhibit, curated by Drew Ann Wake.

UWS2014 features fifty-five inter- and multi-disciplinary panels on the environment.

Other additional events include:

  • Dr. Garth Paine's Listen(n) Virtual Reality Listening Post, also available throughout the conference
  • Dr. Donia Mounsef's Eco Echo Poetics Project, a group of MP3 poems available free throughout the conference
  • Wicked Questions, Minnesota filmmaker Teresa Konechne will be working on her newest project, Wicked Questions: a global conversation about climate:

"I invite you to participate by considering your deepest questions about climate change. If you don’t have a question, I will guide you through a process to find one. These will be written on a board and photographed. I will also video your question. These will become part of the documentation of the conference, and part of the larger Wicked Questions global project. I will have specific times/places posted that I will be doing this work. Please help the world know what is in your heart about what we are all facing."

Along with Teresa, Joel Dryden and CrowdAct will be on hand with their British Phone Booth— in which anyone can record a public statement.
