It's Time: Phase Out Cosmetic Pesticides Concert, Films & Action Blitz

Jun 18 2008 - 6:30pm

Killing us softly

Arusha Action Film features political action blitz

Arusha Centre

Just how committed are Calgarians to dandelion-free parks? Calgary is the largest city in Canada still using cosmetic pesticides. Some of these chemicals could be killing us. Robin McLeod of the Coalition for a Healthy Calgary says The City of Calgary uses Killex 500, a cocktail of 2, 4-D, Dicamba and Mecoprop that has been “pervasively linked to cancers, neurological impairment and reproductive problems,” on public land.

Calgary City Council will be reviewing bylaws to legislate phasing out the use of cosmetic pesticides.

Arusha’s June Action Film event is an evening of short animated films, music and a political action blitz to send a message to City Councilors to pass tough bylaws against using cosmetic pesticides.

Films: 10 short films from the Youth Animation Project (YAP) who mentored with Alberta Wilderness Association. YAP provides young people with employability skills training in communication, resume writing, and project management and planning, while giving them the opportunity to be creative as a catalyst to personal and social development. Music: Performances by local musicians Anne Loree, The Widow Makers, Micel and Original Medecine and Lorrie Matheson.

Political Action Blitz: participate on the spot in a letter writing, email and phone blitz to encourage City Council to support this bylaw.
