Background information

The Calgary Region Airshed Zone (CRAZ) is working with Alberta Environment and Stantec Consulting Ltd. to draft a Particulate matter and Ozone Management Plan for the Calgary Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). Particulate matter and ozone are two important components of smog and are risks to both human and plant health.

Recent exceedances of the provincial air quality planning trigger for ozone and near exceedances of the trigger for particulate matter in the Calgary region require the creation of a Plan.

CRAZ recently conducted four workshops with stakeholders to inform them about some of the technical work done to date and to obtain feedback from them on how to improve air quality in the Calgary CMA.

Five questions were analyzed during the workshops:

  1. What will be the best indicator of good air quality in the Calgary region?
  2. Since the area will continue to grow in population for many years, what are some tools we can use to plan effectively for these new emissions?
  3. Who should bear the responsibility to make sure that the Plan is implement4ed correctly and the actions in it are enforced?
  4. Where should the funding to implement the Plan and its actions come from?
  5. What are some methods that can be used to raise awareness and educate the people in the Calgary region about air quality issues?

The information session for October 29th will summarize the feedback from these workshops.

Sincerely,
Shirley Mushey, President
Bow Valley Clean Air Society (member of the CRAZ organization)
