Engagement Session: Conservation & Management of Riparian Lands in Alberta

Jul 30 2012 - 9:30am - 12:30pm

Help improve conservation & management of riparian lands in Alberta

You are receiving this invitation because the Riparian Land Conservation and Management (RLCM) Project Team would like your input.  Four sectors have decided to work together to gather this input, in order to better represent your ideas when building recommendations. These four sectors have similar membership and can offer more opportunities to more individuals by working together.

Which RLCM Sector Representatives are sending out this Invitation?

  • Environmental (Donna Mendelsohn, Alberta Environment Network Water Caucus)
  • Fisheries Habitat (Norine Ambrose, Cows and Fish)
  • Lake Environment Conservation (Stephanie Neufeld, Alberta Lake Management Society)
  • Watershed and Planning Advisory Councils (Judy Stewart, Bow River Basin Council)

Why participate? Help build recommendations for Alberta's riparian lands:

  • you will help your representatives to better understand your sector’s interests.
  • you will help to build recommendations for better riparian land management in Alberta.

What are we asking of you?

  • Review the linked report and contribute your ideas!

The Alberta Water Council (AWC) is a multi-stakeholder partnership with members from governments, industry and non-government organizations, all with vested interests in water. The Council advises the Government of Alberta, stakeholders and the public on specific water issues.

RLCM was identified as a priority and the AWC struck a Project Team to examine the issue. The RLCM Team goal is to enhance knowledge and provide recommendations for effective conservation and management of riparian lands in support of Water for Life goals. Team activities include:

  • Developing a working definition for riparian lands.
  • Documenting the current state of riparian lands, management, and stewardship in Alberta and the riparian management and stewardship best practices of other jurisdictions.
  • Developing recommendations for improvement of riparian land conservation and management in Alberta.

The Team is distributing the report, to be used as a tool to inform your input:

Fiera Biological Consulting. 2012. Riparian Lands in Alberta: Current state, conservation tools, and management approaches. Report prepared by S. Clare and G. Sass for the Alberta Water Council.

Please note:  The consultant’s report was accepted as information, to be considered along with information from other sources, as the team develops recommendations.
