2018 AEN Spring Assembly

Jun 8 2018 - 10:00am - 4:30pm
Jun 9 2018 - 9:00am - 4:00pm

AEN is focused on building capacity to preserve and protect Alberta’s environment. We work to support and amplify AEN members’ work. Over the past two years, AEN members have discussed strategies to optimise the impact of the Network and its member organizations. This spring we will gather over 2 days to put these strategies into practice.

AEN member groups work on a broad range of inter-connected issues covering a wide geographic area. The urgency of our environmental objectices requires that we work together strategically and effectively. Meeting in person—knowing each another, our environmental imperatives, and how to support each other—is very important to actualising collective action and impact. To this end we have organized a program that provide practical instruction, knowledge exchange, and skill building to guide and focus our collective purpose. We strongly encourage you to join your fellow environmental advocates on June 8 and 9 to contribute your unique perspective and expertise.

3) “How to Strategize”
Based on caucus activities, reports and discussions, AEN members will explore the following questions for the remainder of the day:

  • Who are my/our people? What is the problem they face?
  • What is the the problem?
Why hasn’t the the problem been solved?
Who has the resources to solve the problem?
What haven’t they used them to solve the problem?
Do we know how to solve it, but just lack the necessary resources?
Or do we need to first figure out how to solve the problem?
  • What would it take to solve the problem?
If the problem were to go away, what would need to be different in the world? What would you have to build, who would you need to elect, what law would need to be changed, what program would need to be funded?

LUNCH

“How to Strategize” continued

  • What is the strategic goal?
Where and how to focus to avoid risking / wasting resources?
What goal can we work toward that may not solve the whole problem, but will get us tangibly closer to solving the problem?

Nested goals take place over time, build community, make incremental changes en route to the “mountaintop” goal.

    Effective strategic goals
  • Create measurable change in the world, often by tangibly improving the lives of the people who are organizing
  • Focus resources on a single strategic outcome
  • Build the capacity of the community
  • Use a point of leverage - our community’s strengths . our opposition’s weakness
  • Focus on a motivational issue that is visible and significant to our community.

BREAK

  • What is the Theory of Change?
Theory of change explains how what we do will result in the change that we want. It is a hypothesis about how we will achieve the change we want.

    Theory of Change Statement
  • A tool to understand the strategy and how / if it will work.
  • Exposes weak assumptions
  • Useful to compare several possible strategies for achieving same goal.
  • Forces refinement and tough conversations
  • Forces you to understand your strategy well.
