Call for Nominations to NSWA Board of Directors

Background: 

The North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) is a non-profit society whose purpose is to protect and improve water quality and ecosystem functioning in the North Saskatchewan River watershed in Alberta. The organization is guided by a Board of Directors composed of member organizations from within the watershed. It is the designated Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) for the North Saskatchewan River under Alberta Environment's Water for Life Strategy.

Alberta Water Council: Call for Members for New Team

On June 4, the AB Water Council approved the launch of a Project Team – likely the only new one for the rest of 2009-2010, given budget constraints. AEN is being asked to nominate by this Friday June 12 a rep to a working group in June, and by end of June to nominate a rep (not necessarily the same person) to the Project Team from July to March 2010.

If you’re interested in representing AEN on the working group or project Team, please reply to Meghan meghan [at] water-matters [dot] org by noon Thursday June 11.

Project Focus

Team is to Identify Criteria for Areas of Significance for maintenance of aquatic ecosystem health. This was identified as a high priority step towards a broader source water protection/sensitive areas protection strategy by the Healthy Aquatic Ecosystem Team in their March 2009 report. Alberta Environment strongly supported a multi-stakeholder team moving forward on this topic. Read more »

Calling on young environmentalists to join the RCEN at its June Assembly in Edmonton

What: Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) 2009 Annual General Assembly
Where: Edmonton, Alberta
When:
June 12th to 14th 2009

The RCEN is looking for 10 youth participants (ages 18 to 30) from across the country to come and represent Canadian youth at this annual gathering of grassroots environmental organizations. This gathering is meant to tackle the most important environmental and policy issues faced in Canada and internationally. By mobilizing a group of youth, we hope to better integrate your voices in these issues, get you involved in the RCEN and give you an opportunity to meet other youth engaged in environmental issues, as well as some of the most experienced environmentalists in the country!

BiodiverCity: Cities of Nature, In Nature

To highlight the important relationship between cities and biodiversity, speakers at the event will explore the impact of urban demands on resources to the possibilities of growing more food locally and the benefits of natural areas within cities. Other scheduled activities include: panels on environmental assessment and sustainable community management; a workshop on nuclear energy; an inter-organizational fair; and a slam poetry session/music jam. Call for Delegate: NRCB Policy Advisory Board

The Alberta Environmental Network has been notified that there is a need to identify an alternate member to the NRCB policy advisory group (PAG). The NRCB delivers the Agricultural Operation Practices Act and provides broad governance, administrative policy, and appeals. The Policy Advisory Group (PAG) is a multi-stakeholder advisory committee that provides advice to the Chief Executive Officer of the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) on matters related to the effective delivery of the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA).

Call for Delegates: Alberta Water Council

The Alberta Environmental Network has received a delegate selection request for 1 representative and 1 alternate to participate as members on the Alberta Water Council for a two year term beginning January 2009.

The Alberta Water Council has been tasked with tracking implementation of the Alberta Water for Life strategy, a province-wide approach to the protection of watersheds in Alberta. To learn more about the Alberta Water for Life Strategy, go to http://www.waterforlife.gov.ab.ca. Roles and Responsibilities of Alberta Water Council Members

  • Participate actively in Alberta Water Council meeting which will occur approximately 4-5 times/year.
  • Work with and communicate regularly to the Alberta Environmental Network Water Caucus membership to represent the views of this constituency, and to keep each other informed about Council business.
  • Take an active role in the work of the Council by participating in project teams and committees, championing an activity and otherwise promoting awareness of the Council and its priorities as opportunities arise. 
  • Supports and adheres to the Alberta Water Council’s ground rules and principles of consensus decision making
  • Preparation of reports to the AEN Water Caucus following AWC meetings.

This success is built on the strong participation of environmental groups in CASA, and the inclusion of important structural features such as balanced representation, stakeholder support, Alberta Environment's commitment to champion consensus recommendations, and sectoral representation and self-selection.

Recent events have led to ENGO vacancies on CASA committees and project teams:

Electricity Five-year Review Project Team

The Electricity Five-year Review Project Team is conducting a review of the air emissions management framework for Alberta's electricity producing sector. An ENGO successor to Linda Duncan (recently elected to Parliament) is needed for this project team. Familiarity with (or a strong commitment to understand) the Emissions Management Framework for the Alberta Electricity Sector is required for this position.

Communications and Performance Measures

CASA Communications Committee and Performance Measures Sub-committee each offer an entry-level introduction to CASA while performing an important operation function for the organization and requiring easily transferable skills. AEN members with experience in public awareness/marketing, and performance indicators are encouraged to apply to serve on these CASA committees.

Priority Setting Workshop

Interested in helping set the agenda for which pollutants move to the top of the list for establishing ambient air quality objectives? Every three years, an open workshop to identify the leading candidates for new or revised ambient air quality objectives is held. An ENGO member for the organizing committee of this important event is needed.
