One of the key directions of the Government of Alberta's Water For Life (WFL) strategy is that Albertans will improve the efficiency and productivity of their water use by 30% from 2005 levels by 2015. The purpose of this initiative is to provide multi-stakeholder support to the seven major water-using sectors in Alberta as they develop plans to improve their conservation, efficiency and productivity to contribute to the goals set out in WFL. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance knowledge and provide recommendations for effective conservation and management of riparian lands in support of Water for Life goals. The Project Team will work to gain an understanding of the current state of riparian lands, management, and stewardship in Alberta and the riparian management and stewardship “best practices” of other jurisdictions.

Call for Participants: Lower Athabasca Regional Plan Draft Management Frameworks

On April 5th, 2011 the Government of Alberta released the draft Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP) to the public.

The Land Use Secretariat is leading a consultation process on the draft plan from early April to early June, 2011. As part of this, consultation sessions will be held throughout the Lower Athabasca Region, neighbouring communities, as well as Edmonton and Calgary. A workbook is also available online or at these consultation sessions for Albertans to submit feedback on the draft regional plan. The draft plan, details on the consultation, and other related documents including the draft management frameworks are available online at www.landuse.alberta.ca. Read more »

The NRCB delivers the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) and provides broad governance, administrative policy, and appeals. The Policy Advisory Group (PAG) is a multi-stakeholder advisory committee that provides advice to the Chief Executive Officer of the NRCB on matters related to the effective delivery of the AOPA.  ENGOs have been represented on the PAG since its inception by the Southern Alberta Group for the Environment and the Environmental Law Centre. Call for Delegates: ENGO Delegates, Confined Feeding Operations Project Implementation Working Group

In 2008 the Confined Feeding Operations (CFO) Project Team developed 10 recommendations to improve the management of air emissions from existing and future CFOs in Alberta, and to improve relationships between stakeholders.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) has led the implementation of these recommendations. ARD has requested that a multi-stakeholder implementation team be established to serve as a liaison between the CASA board, the CFO recommendation implementers, and the former CFO project team. Call for Delegates: Member, Developing a Water for Life Partnership Strategy Working Group

The AEN has received a request from the Alberta Water Council (AWC) to identify two to three ENGO sector participants for a new working group: Developing a Water for Life Partnership Strategy.

Deadline to indicate interest is at noon Monday April 12, 2010.

Background

The Council recognized a need to improve communication, coordination, integration and cooperation between the Alberta Water Council and the other Water for Life partnerships – particularly the Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils and decided to create a Working Group to further examine the issue.

No firm project description exists – the purpose of the Working Group will be to develop a clear, concise, achievable project (ie. Develop a Terms of Reference)

The Working Group will not “do” the project, but will describe a project to be completed by a Project Team. Read more »

Background

The Council, through its “Recommended Projects to Advance the Goal of Healthy Aquatic Ecosystems” recognized an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the contributions of non-point source pollution and the policies and tools that can minimize their impacts. Work in this area appears to align nicely with the Government of Alberta’s new direction to address impacts of all activities on the landscape through a cumulative effects management approach Read more »
