The Government of Alberta is looking for individuals who live, work, play and have an interest in the North Saskatchewan region to become members of the Regional Advisory Council for the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance knowledge and provide recommendations for improved water literacy in Alberta. The project team will be developing a definition for water literacy; an inventory of existing programs and products for water literacy in Alberta; a review and evaluation of water literacy best practices from other jurisdictions; an assessment of water literacy levels among Albertans; and propose recommendations for improving water literacy in Alberta.

The intent of this Plan is to guide future resource management decisions, while considering social and economic impacts of development in northeastern Alberta. Call for Delegates: Alberta Water Conversations Validation Meeting

Earlier this year, the Government of Alberta conducted a series of 44 Water Conversation sessions across all 11 provincial watersheds. Multiple members of the Alberta Water Council actively participated in these sessions, during which four primary topic areas were put forth for discussion. These included Healthy Lakes, Water Management, Drinking Water and Wastewater Systems, and Hydraulic Fracturing and Water. Many valuable perspectives and insights were garnered from these sessions. On behalf of Environment Canada (EC) and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD), I would like to invite up to three representatives from the Alberta Environmental Network to participate on each of the Component Advisory Committees (Air, Water, Biodiversity, and Wildlife Contaminants and Toxicology).  The Component Advisory Committees support the Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan for Oil Sands Monitoring (“the Implementation Plan”). At CASA’s June Board meeting, a Statement of Opportunity was presented on non-point source air emissions. A clear outcome of the discussion was the Board’s decision to convene a small, one day workshop on non-point source air emissions. The purpose of the workshop will be to explore potential areas of work for a Non-Point Source Air Emissions project, and to provide advice for the Board’s consideration as they discuss whether this is an appropriate issue for CASA to address. Alberta Caribou Action & Range Planning Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Group: Cold Lake Caribou Range

The Government of Alberta is developing caribou action plan(s) and range plans for Alberta’s fifteen caribou populations. The plans are being developed to meet the requirements of the 2012 Federal Recovery Strategy for the Woodland Caribou, Boreal Population. A phased approach will be taken to develop the plans: (1) Little Smoky/A La Peche, (2) Cold Lake, (3) northeast caribou ranges, and (4) northwest and remaining mountain caribou ranges. Read more »

Context

On June 1, 2013 at the Alberta Environmental Network AGM at the Bennett Environmental Centre in Edmonton, Alberta representatives of several member groups proposed the creation of the AEN Environmental Regulatory Caucus.

Caucuses are the action arms of the AEN. They exist for member groups to share resources and jointly work on their shared agendas. Often this involves meeting with government, industry and other relevant sectors. New caucuses and working groups can be initiated if there is sufficient need and member group interest. Read more »
