The Government of Alberta is currently undertaking a process to update the Water Conservation and Allocation Policy for Oilfield Injection (2006). The policy is being updated to meet a public commitment to review the policy and to address new and emerging water use issues in the upstream oil and gas sector.

This policy seeks to conserve fresh water in upstream oil and gas development; changes currently proposed include the expansion of the scope of the existing policy to all major water uses in the upstream oil and gas industry. See attached background document for additional information on extent of changes to the 2006 policy.

Purpose and Tasks:

To ensure a thorough review process, Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development will establish a multi-stakeholder working group chaired by Andy Ridge, Executive Director of the Water Policy Branch. The working group will review the proposed policy and provide comments and recommendations on its essential components.
