Ambient air quality objectives are an important part of Alberta’s air quality management system as they help protect the health of Albertan’s and the environment. Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) sets ambient air quality objectives for the province under section 14 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. It is important that the objectives be reviewed on a regular basis and new objectives be developed when there is a need.

As part of Alberta’s comprehensive approach to air quality management, Alberta Environment and Parks have worked with a multi-stakeholder committee to develop and review ambient air quality objectives since 2001. The committee has successfully reviewed or developed thirty objectives in that time. The ministerial committee was sunsetted in December 2015, and relaunched under the umbrella of CASA in March 2017.

The committee will:

  1. review scientific information specific to the substance and consider:
    • adverse health effects;
    • adverse ecosystem effects;
  2. consider technological and economic factors; and
  3. strive to reach consensus on the recommendation to AEP on proposed objectives.
Time Commitment: 

The committee is expected to meet four times per year, and complete AEP’s work plan by March 2020. Applicants should be prepared to commit additional time to sub-group meetings.

Expenses & Honoraria: 

Honoraria and reimbursement of travel expenses are available in accordance with CASA’s Policy on Stakeholder Support.

Selection Criteria: 

The representative should also have the following attributes:

  • Knowledge and familiarity with general air pollution and air quality management issues in Alberta;
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives (AAAQO) and Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS);
  • Knowledge and experience working with scientific and technical information about air pollution and air quality;
  • Technical expertise in air pollution impacts on human or ecosystem health is considered an asset;
  • Technical expertise in air emissions measurement, ambient air monitoring, air quality modelling, or air quality management is considered an asset;
  • Record of effective participation in CASA Project Teams, or other consensus-based multi-stakeholder processes;
  • Support and endorsement of an environmental non-governmental organization active in Alberta with a demonstrated commitment to the environmental stewardship, and promotion of air quality improvement.

Delegate Expectations

  • Review and analyze background documents provided.
  • Actively participate and provide input at the meetings.
  • Ensure that their alternate is kept up-to-date and well-briefed. Where possible, organizations should nominate both a primary member and an alternate.
  • Provide updates to and receive feedback from the ENGO sector by participating in AEN conference calls & meetings, and providing periodic written briefs.

The selected delegates are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the objects and values of the Alberta Environmental Network. The objects of the AEN include:

  1. to encourage and support networking, communication, and resource sharing amongst non-governmental environmental organizations…
  2. to facilitate common action and/or joint initiatives by some or all of its member groups
