Management Plan for the Dwarf Woolly-heads (Psilocarphus brevissimus), Prairie population, in Canada
Deadline:
15 Mar 2016

From: Mark Wayland, Head Species at Risk Unit, Canadian Wildlife Service

We are writing to notify you that the proposed Management Plan for the Dwarf Woolly-heads (Psilocarphus brevissimus) - Prairie Population - in Canada was posted on the Species at Risk Public Registry on January 15, 2016 for a 60-day public comment period which ends on March 15, 2016.

Dwarf Woolly-heads Prairie Population, is listed as Special Concern under the federal Species at Risk Act. It is a small, annual herb with leaves and flower heads that are densely woolly, with the latter being fairly inconspicuous. Fruits are achenes (small, one-sided fruits with a single seed) that are free from barbs or hairs. In Canada, Dwarf Woolly-heads Prairie Populations are restricted to the drying or drawdown edges of ephemeral wetlands in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. The most significant threat to Dwarf Woolly-heads on the prairies is continued habitat loss, fragmentation and/or degradation through the creation of roads, transmission lines, and pipelines. Some other human activities threaten the species, but their impacts are individually low or negligible.

The proposed Management Plan provides background information on the species, identifies threats to the species and its habitat, establishes recovery objectives, and recommends broad strategies to help guide the actions needed to conserve and recover Dwarf Woolly-heads in Canada.

The proposed Management Plan for the Dwarf Woolly-heads  - Prairie Population is now available on-line on the Species at Risk Public Registry for a 60-day public comment period beginning January 15, 2016 and ending March 15, 2016.  After this period, we will update and finalize the document based on a review of all information received. We will also notify you when the final document is posted to the registry.
