The cry "Go Local!" is increasingly heard today, with proponents pointing to numerous benefits to a thriving local food system, including access to nutritious foods, support for local farmers, closer connections between producers and consumers, lower carbon footprint, and reduced dependency on volatile global agricultural markets. But great ideas are not always easily put into practice, and creating a local food system faces multiple challenges, as well as rewards. Hear from two leaders in the Canadian Local Foods Movement about their own experiences working to create sustainable local production and retailing industries here in our own backyard, and join us in discussions about how to deepen our relationships to the food we eat, and the farmers who produce it. An evening presentation by Bill Swan – Greenman Sustainable Solutions
In response to the growing interest in local food security, healthy food in schools, and the overall sustainability of our agriculture systems, 300 community volunteers in Invermere BC teamed up to build a 300 sq. ft. greenhouse. It is now producing both food and sustainability programs for school and community audiences. Bill Swan, Community Greenhouse Project lead, will discuss how the project was developed including the many social, technical and logistical challenges and successes the project team encountered during the design, construction and operation of this successful initiative.
