Jan 25 2011 - 7:00pm

with Dr. Erin Bayne

After many years of research, Dr. Bayne has come to some very interesting and informative conclusions about what is happening to birds of the boreal forest here in Alberta.  Hear fascinating details about the lives of these birds, especially how boreal forest development is impacting breeding and survival rates.  Which species are doing well?  Which species need more of our consideration and help?

Electricity from the Sun - from Dreamer's Paradise to Everyday Use

Jan 13 2011 - 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Presented by:
Gordon Howell, PEng.

Free public presentation and discussion. No registration.

The world of solar energy is changing quickly. The price of solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity continues its march downwards along with staggering world-wide growth. Solar electricity is now becoming affordable for us in our everyday lives. At the same time, we see that the price of electricity is poised to rise even more to pay for new transmission lines and cleaning up our dirty-coal electricity. Read more »

Solar Energy Society Seminar: PassivHaus Building Design

Dec 8 2010 - 7:00pm

PassivHaus Building Design
Coming to a Neighborhood Near You

Stuart Fix, Vital Engineering

Free presentation and discussion. No registration required. Free refreshments at 6:30 pm

Popular in Europe for years, the German PassivHaus design standard aims to design buildings that do not require active heating or cooling systems. In reality this is not possible, but through radical envelope upgrades and optimized solar gain design, a Passive House building will require only 15kWh/m2yr to heat, roughly corresponding to a 90% reduction over code built buildings. Passive House buildings focus on reducing a building’s energy loads to an optimized minimum, before renewable energy technologies are sized. Capital cost savings are generated through reduced mechanical system size, which can nearly offset the capital cost increases due to the envelope upgrades. This presentation will explain the Passive House design method, highlight its advantages & disadvantages, and give an overview of the Passive House movement’s growth in Canada. Read more »

AWA Talk: Turkey Vultures - Mother Nature's Cleanup Crew

Nov 23 2010 - 7:00pm

Part of Mother Nature’s clean-up crew, turkey vultures have attracted relatively little scientific study.  In 2003 Wayne Nelson and several Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division colleagues  followed up on public reports of vultures on old buildings in eastern and northeastern Alberta and a significant study has arisen.  In 2006 Wayne retired as a wildlife biologist and, along with Rick Morse, carried the vulture project into his retirement and expanded it.
