The research is now clear that burning coal comes with substantial human health costs. In Alberta alone, coal contributes to over 100 fatalities and more than 4,000 asthma symptom days every year (A Costly Diagnosis, 2013). The majority of Alberta's electricity is generated by coal-fired plants. Public forum: Obed Mine release and independent scientific review of remediation plans

The University of Alberta (U of A) Water Initiative and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) will hold a public forum the afternoon of Thursday, February 27 to share findings of an independent scientific review of Sherritt International’s Obed mine release remediation plans. The review was conducted by leading water scientists engaged by ERSD through the U of A Water Initiative. First Nations, Métis and Sherritt International will also participate in the forum.
